KAPRIMO

Kathmandu Participatory River Monitoring (KAPRIMO in short) is an EU funded project, under the Asia Pro Eco Programme. The project aims to develop, implement and demonstrate a functional and non-conventional river monitoring system, which will stand alone as the backbone and pioneering step towards the restoration process of the polluted rivers of the Kathmandu Valley. It is expected that KAPRIMO will serve as a catalyst for basin and nation-wide river monitoring and conservation planning.

The project started as from February 2006 as a joint effort of three project partners: (1) Adelphi Research, Germany, (2) ECCA, Nepal, and (3) ITC, the Netherlands. ITC stands for International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation, located in Enschede, the Netherlands. From the side of ITC, the Netherlands Dr. Dhruba Pikha Shrestha is the project manager. ITC’s role in the project is site selection for river monitoring, training the authorities in Geographical Information System, spatial data handling and river water quality data analysis. Dhruba was involved in conducting a two week training course in Kathmandu in January 2007. The training course was attended by 18 representatives from Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City, Department of Hydrology and Metrology, Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, Department of Local Infrastructure Development and Agricultural Roads, Bhaktapur municipality, Kirtipur municipality, Thimi Municipality, and Environmental Camps for Conservation Awareness.
